Awards:

A cash prize of $500 will be awarded to one student in each of the following categories:

  • Print Design
  • Advertising
  • Interactive & Motion Design

Winning students will also receive a GDC/BC Salazar Student Award Certificate. Winners and Honourable Mentions will be recognized at the Salazar Awards Evening to be hosted at the Roundhouse Community & Arts Center by New York design legend Stefan Sagmeister, will be featured in the Salazar Awards Show and will appear in featured publications and the GDC Newsletter distributed to design, advertising and media professionals across Canada.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to all students who are enrolled in BC academically recognized certificate, diploma or degree graphic design and advertising programs. Students can be at any stage of these programs but must have a signed entry form from an instructor or program director stating that the applicant is enrolled in the named program

Submission Specifications

Each entrant may submit up to four pieces of work, and each piece of work must be accompanied by an official entry form with:

  • A brief description of the design problem solved
  • A brief description of the designer’s rationale for his or her solution
Preparation:

Print submissions must be mounted on matte black board up to 18” x 24”; Pieces larger than this must be photographed or scanned then reproduced and mounted on matte black board no larger than 18” x 24”. Printed screen captures may be submitted in support of web, interactive or motion graphics work however a functioning CD, DVD or web site URL providing access to the actual piece must be included.

Background:

The GDC/BC Salazar Student Awards were established in 1985 to honour Enrique Salazar, a founding member of the Society, a BC National Representative, Partner in Salazar Graphics and a highly regarded member of the BC design community.

Among many other achievements, Enrique Salazar remained committed to design education throughout his career and taught Graphic Design at Capilano College until his death in June 1985.

In 2008, Metropolitan Fine Printers, the Founding Sponsor of this event, has once again joined with the GDC to commemorate Enrique Salazar and celebrate BC’c most talented and promising design students and their inspirational work.

The judging:

A selection of top GDC/BC design professionals will form a judging committee to scrutinize the entries and select the Winners and Honourable Mentions for each category. Judging will be based upon the quality of the design solution, the validity of the designer’s rationale for the solution, and the quality of execution of the piece itself.

Judging will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2008

The GDC/BC is not responsible for any loss or damage that may occur to entries. Entrants are asked to ensure that entries are thoroughly and appropriately documented before submitting to the competition.

Return of entries:

Entries not picked-up by May 23, 2008 will be discarded.
