They were there to find out the winners of the 24th annual Salazar Awards, an award that recognizes excellence in student design. The Salazar Awards are named after Enrique Salazar, a founding member of the GDC, and instructor at Capilano College until his death in 1985. These awards recognize his contribution to educating young designers.

  • Web Design and Interactive Media - Stefan Ramirez Perez, Vancouver Film School

Web Directions North (Student Pricing)

I like code. I don’t know why, people think I’m weird, but I like seeing systems and patterns within the code. One of the most appealing things about it is that it’s constantly changing and new ideas and concepts (see microformats). One of the great ways to stay on top of new processes, learn some new coding techniques (see Transcending CSS) and meet some like minded individuals is to check out conferences. One of which takes place in Vancouver every year and is called Web Directions North. I encourage everyone to check out the info about but I noticed something come along my RSS feed this morning that I had to spread the word about.

In the name of education and corrupting expanding the upcoming design minds of tomorrow, the conference is opening up a select number of student tickets. So if you’re a full time student, like code, and wanna nerd it out for a few days, check out the low down on this opportunity.

Design & Daiquiris: Adventures in La Habana

Design & Daiquiris: Adventures in La Habana

The following is an account of Emily Curtis’s experience as a GDC Student accompanying the BC delegation to Havana, Cuba for the Icograda World Design Congress in October, 2007.

I’m always slightly nervous when flying, but as I sat on a plane bound for the ICOGRADA World Design Congress in Havana, Cuba, my palms were especially clammy. I guess this extra bit of anxiety could be chalked up to the fact that I was about to embark on a potentially career-defining adventure to a developing country with a group of relative strangers to meet the who’s who of graphic design. Did I mention that I don’t speak any Spanish?

The following is an account of Rachel Evans’s experience as a GDC Student accompanying the BC delegation to Havana, Cuba for the Icograda World Design Congress in October, 2007.

I have always been one of those unusual individuals that loved school. Having recently graduated in April after six years of university, six different schools and a total of nineteen years of consecutive schooling, September approached with much mourning. Having attended Emily Carr Institute for four years, home had become an environment that fostered learning, community, creativity, personal expression, social responsibility and an overall ambition to make the world a better place. I got accustomed to days full of inspiration, which made me feel whole and alive. This fall brought with it much melancholy, as it seemed everyone was back to school and I was now alone in the real world without my tight niche design community.
