“My name is Leo Obstbaum, and I am a dreamer.” Remembering Vancouver 2010’s Design Director

Leo Obstbaum, Design Director for VANOC 2010 Olympics

My friend and colleague Leo Obstbaum, the creative mastermind behind the designs of the Vancouver Olympic Games, died suddenly in his home of natural causes in the early hours of Friday, August 21st. He left behind his beautiful wife Monice and young daughter Dakota. He was just 40 years old—the same age as I am.

Leo and I spoken numerous times that week and even had plans to meet that day after work to catch up over drinks and discuss a presentation he’d been preparing about his work on the Olympics. It was a talk he hoped to refine and present during Icograda Design Week Vancouver next spring. I’ll never forget hearing the tragic news and trying to come to terms with the fact that my friend was suddenly gone. It really shook me up. As devastated as I felt, I couldn’t imagine the feeling of loss his family was enduring.

Our friends at Ascent Group have created a workshop with design and creative services firms in mind.

Access and engage practical business methods, tools & strategies in this 3-day Interactive Workshop that is guaranteed to give you leverage on your current resources, leadership, and potential.

Right or wrong, as owners, leaders and managers we are under constant pressure to not just meet expectations & responsibilities, but outperform them. And on top of that, many of us have witnessed the trend of creative value becoming commoditized, causing your profitability to shrink faster than ice cubes in the Sahara. There are ways can take control and do something about it.

In this unique hands-on workshop, designed specifically for Creative Services Studio principals, you’ll learn how to:

Engage your full creative and business potential as a studio.
Optimize your “organically grown” resources.
Leverage your five principal drivers of achievable success.

Wolda Logo Design Contest Announces Judges

wolda-logo-contest.jpgWolda ‘08 Worldwide Logo Design Annual Winners Announced, though none from Canada or Mexico

We’ve kept our eye on this year’s inaugural Wolda ‘08 Worldwide Logo Design Competition hosted by Italy’s Eulda Books. They recently announce the winners chosen by an international three-tier jury, including GDC’s own David Coates. 192 logos (174 professionals + 18 designed by students) were selected from almost 1100 entries submitted from 43 different countries around the world—though not a single winner were from either Mexico or Canada. All winning logos are showcased on their website and in the Wolda ‘08 printed annual available for sale now.

Let’s hope we see a few Canadian examples of winning logo design in the 2009 competition.
