The winners of the 12th annual Webby Awards were just announced and the Graphex 2008 website, designed and developed by Industrial Brand Creative, was chosen as an Honoree out of more than 8,000 entries in 70 categories.
The creative tournament ladder-inspired theme exploring the connections and possibilities of good design was thoughtfully developed by Rethink Communications, who are also producing the beautiful catalogue showcasing all the Graphex winners (available at GDC.net soon).
To be named as a honoree in the Webby Awards means being selected from amongst the very best in interactive design, so a hearty congratulations to all the volunteers who worked hard to produce this terrific website, promotional campaign and the entire competition. Great team effort.
What a wild and fantastically inspiring Graphex weekend! We’re all just recovering and starting in on all the follow up work but there are a few bits of news in need of sharing. First and foremost the winners exhibit is starting its national tour starting in Vancouver (seems logical since everyone was just here!). It’s displaying at the Pendulum Gallery in the HSBC Building at 885 W. Georgia until April 11th. This is truly some of the best in current Canadian Design and is well worth the trip down to check out. We’ve also posted the video vignettes at Video.ca (available here, here and here). Photos are also starting to come in and will be archived on the our Flickr Account (and the Graphex Collection) The coveted Graphex Catalogues are being produced now and will be available for sale shortly, stay tuned!

Graphex 2008 launches with a bang.
November 30th, 2007 saw a festive start to Graphex 2008 with catered food, drinks and mingling with some of the BC design community’s best and brightest at the Graphex Judges Evening hosted by GDC/BC at UBC Robson Square. And the festive atmosphere continued through the center-piece of the Judges Evening: The individual presentations from each of the judges and the opportunity for the assembled audience to pose questions from the floor.
Some stirring remarks by GDC/BC President Mark Busse and a special message from National VP of Communications Rod Roodenburg marked the beginning of the presentations and each of the judges in turn gave their insightful, informed sometimes humorous and always heart-felt perspective on the power of design, delivering what will almost certainly be looked-back upon as one of the richest evenings of design discourse to occur in Vancouver this year.

Designer, web phenom, teacher and philosopher-comic Ze Frank has agreed to be the official MC presiding over the Graphex 2008 Gala Awards Ceremony and dinner at the prestigious Vancouver Club on March 28, 2008.
If you don’t remember Frank’s rapid rise to Internet fame in 2001 with his viral video “How to Dance Properly,” or his year-long web experiment “The Show With Ze Frank” which drew media praise and thousands of daily viewers, then perhaps a more recent example of his presentation skills at this year’s TED conference will convince you that this is an event not to be missed.
For more information on Ze Frank and an assortment of his web designs, humour and multimedia, visit www.zefrank.com.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Graphex 2008 —
“The Best of Visual Communications: Opens a World of Possibilities”
Graphex 2008 is an Icograda-endorsed national design competition that has been celebrating the best of visual communication in Canada since 1977. The primary goals of Graphex are to promote the value of design to the Canadian public and business community – Good Design Is Good Business – and to create an archive of Canadian design for future generations to reflect upon and study. Graphex thrives on learning from and rewarding those designers who are addressing increasingly complex and diverse creative challenges. As such, the theme for Graphex 2008 positions the winning entry as not only the end result of a tournament style process of elimination but also as the catalyst for a ripple effect of influence upon the world at large. The point of this is to highlight the fact that while many designers do not often look past the moment of winning an award, there are larger issues at stake and greater possibilities for change than whatever was the design’s original intention. In doing so, we are reminded of both the importance of design’s place in society and the responsibility that designers must assume as a result.
What effects will your design have?
Information, rules, guidelines and entry forms are available at www.gdc.net/graphex.
