Rarely does my gingerbread house have to bear the load of snow, yet it has a pitched roof. Seldom is my cookie-abode configured with electric light, yet it sports no skylights. The gingerbread man doesn’t know how to drive, yet the house features a two-car garage and a driveway.
What ever happened to “form follows function?!”
This November, 10 modernist architects will change all of that, in Creative Room’s Gingerbread Competition and Celebrity Auction.
Bidding begins on November the 19th. Buy tickets today for a gala opening & judging event at Vancouver Special on November 25th that you won’t want to miss.

Last week, while many of us out west worked feverishly to launch the Graphex awards, the winners of the 2007 DX Awards were announced at an awards dinner and gala held at the Design Exchange—Canada’s design museum and centre for design research and education. The DXAs are a Canadian multi-disciplinary design competition based on commercial effectiveness aimed at fostering business and public understanding of the impact of design excellence on the economy and quality of life.
Among the winners of visual communications awards this year are Subplot Design, Exhibit A: Design Group and SmashLAB—all Vancouver firms and professional GDC members. Congratulations Matt, Roy, Cory and Erik!
All winning entries are on display at the Design Exchange. The exhibit will run from November 29 - January 27th, 2008. More info and a complete list of winners can be found here: www.dx.org/dxa

Sustainability is a topic near and dear to my heart, especially when it casts Design in the role ’stalwart supporter of a brighter future.’ It is therefore my pleasure to bring you news of a traveling poster exhibit, created by the GDC Vancouver Island Chapter, with this reassuring message: “Design Cares.”
From the exhibit’s website:
“Graphic design is young: 95% of the graphic designers who have ever lived are alive today. Together we can still define our profession: will it be about inventing visual lies to create larger market share, or will it be about taking responsibility for helping build a better world?”
