Phillip Chin is a Canadian editorial photographer with 20 years experience shooting in Canada and the US. He primarily works in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto. He has been nominated for various awards in north america. Chin is an executive board member of the Western Magazine Awards Foundation and the Glenn Mokk photography foundation. He is a member of the Editorial Photographers of America, the Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators in Communication, the News Photographers Association of Canada and the Graphic Design Guild of Canada.

Canadian magazines cover everything from news to fashion, entertainment to human interest, business to food. There are now more photographers than ever vying for the same (or even less) editorial assignments throughout Canada. This seminar will give young photographers practical information on approaching these magazines and to build a career as an editorial freelancer in these bad economic times.
In this one day seminar, Chin will cover the fundamentals of landing editorial work.
- What exactly is an editorial assignment.
- How to approach magazines and build relationships.
- Tips to finding jobs and getting assignments.
- Magazine vocabulary and language.
- How to prepare for shoots (workflow and time management).
- How to surpass the magazine’s expectations.
- Identify what photo editors are looking for and what they have come to expect.
- Discuss magazine fees, promotional material and invoicing.
- Putting a portfolio together and identifying magazines suitable for your work.
- Students are requested to bring their portfolio for a one on one critique.

The art of portrait photography is the ability to listen, observe and connect with the subject. Whether your goal is a formal portrait or capturing the moment, this workshop will help you create more powerful and meaningful images. This weekend is designed for photographers who would like to improve their communication skills with their subjects.
Through various exercises, you will start to develop the necessary awareness and sensitivity to move beyond literal renderings to more intimate portraits. You will discover effective methods of putting people at ease while finding skills to build your confidence. This is an insightful weekend of having fun while challenging yourself to move beyond where you think you could go in your portrait work.
