Illustrator instructor
The Vancouver Film School’s Digital Design Program is progressive one-year study which combines design theory & management, cinematic montage, and interactive design. Our program provides students with the technical expertise to succeed professionally. Students are encouraged to apply their artistic vision to the widest spectrum of digital experience, from Internet Development, to TV & Film, Gaming, Strategic Marketing, and Software Applications.
The 2D instructor will be responsible for helping develop and deliver a relevant, progressive and creative curriculum that teaches students how to use Illustrator and PhotoShop effectively. In keeping with the school’s policy of employing dynamic professionals on the cutting edge of industry, the Digital Design program is seeking a candidate who currently works in a creative position and brings the following skills to the position:
- Some appreciation of design history and an understanding of classical design composition and design for digital interactive platforms.
- Able to demonstrate proficiency in using PhotoShop as an image manipulation and creation tool.
- Able to demonstrate proficiency in using Illustrator as a vector drawing and print production tool. Students will also use Illustrator as an asset creation program for programs such as Flash, Photoshop and Adobe After Effects.
- Experienced in graphic design and able to conceptualize and manage design briefs that will incorporate Illustrator and PhotoShop with other design tools and techniques, to challenge and motivate students to create effective visual work.
- Able to encourage and inspire students ranging from novice to advanced technical skills in the same course.
- We are looking for the candidate to be able to provide us with a comprehensive portfolio that includes examples of the above skills, techniques and principles.
Responsibilities/Duties
The Illustrator instructor will report to the Department Head and will be responsible for delivering curriculum effectively and providing feedback to students. Specific duties include:
- Working from a course syllabus, develop lesson plans detailing what will be taught and how the course material will be delivered.
- Work closely with the Digital Design Supervisor and Head of Department to ensure class curriculum is accurate and up-to-date and is communicated to students in a clear and concise manner.
- Provide students with guidance and mentorship through various stages of their education
- Mentor students through the application of different methodologies and production techniques.
- Provide students with regular feedback.
Education/Qualifications/Experience
- Relevant degree/diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years of industry experience in a production environment (GDC professional membership preferred)
- Experience working with and teaching students is advantageous
- Ability to lead workshops, lectures and seminars
- Excellent communication, organizational, time management and interpersonal skills
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills
- A good sense of humor
