Get ready…Graphex 2008 is coming.
So ya reckon there have been some exciting changes and events at the GDC recently? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. We’re a few weeks away from the national launch of Graphex 2008 with a killer new Call For Entries campaign designed by GDC member firm Rethink Communications Group in Vancouver with a new website launched soon after. Stay tuned for details to come.

Stanley Hainsworth - Former Creative Director, Nike and current VP, Global Brand Director or Starbucks, Seattle, WA, USA
Stanley Hainsworth is Vice-President global creative for Starbucks Coffee Company, which, in addition to selling coffee, markets music, books and movies in Starbucks shops, on its web site, and in partnership with iTUNES and XM radio. “After several years at Nike as a Creative Director where he worked on everything from hangtags to annual reports to the Olympics, he decided to embark on an adventure in Denmark at the Lego Company as their Global Creative Director. After a total visual overhaul of the Lego brand from top to bottom, including packaging, the web, retail and brand stores, he heeded the call to return to the states where he thought it would be fun to work for a company named after the first mate in Moby Dick – Starbucks. And there he now resides, in the upper left hand corner of the U.S., as their vp, global creative, learning more about the mighty coffee bean than he ever thought possible.”
Peter Steiner - Designer, SDGQ Fellow (Honorary Life Member) & Former Senior Partner, Gottschalk + Ash, Montreal, QC, Canada
Born in Basel, Switzerland. Educated in graphic design at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel which was shaped and influenced by the avant-garde educators of that era.This education provided me with the necessary tools in graphic design andshaped my lifelong passion for communication and problem-solving. More importantly, it instilled within me an everlasting curiosity for acquiring knowledge and an understanding for how the creative arts contribute to shaping our lives.To increase my scope, I moved to Canada in 1967, and worked in Toronto during my first two years. From the start, my ambition was to work with the best, in order to be challenged, learn as much as possible and to excel. In 1969, I had the opportunity to join Fritz Gottschalk and Stuart Ash at their newly formed design practice in Montreal, known as Gottschalk+Ash International. Subsequently, other offices were established in Toronto, New York, Zürich, Milan and Calgary. I have been a partner since the 1970’s and have had the good fortune to participate in building the G+A brand, thanks to truly exciting projects, wonderfully talented partners and colleagues, as well as first-class clients.
Jamie Koval - Partner & Creative Director, VSA Partners, Chicago, IL, USA
Jamie joined as principal and creative director with VSA Partners in 1990 and has been successful in leading clients both large and small to their business objectives through brand communications and creative solutions. His clients have included Adidas, BP, Baker, Cingular, Gap, The Coca-Cola Company and Mohawk Fine Papers. Jamie has lectured and served as a visiting professor at multiple design schools. He has contributed to creative workshops for brands such as Starbucks, Leo Burnett and Einstein Bros. Bagels, and has designed a stamp for the U.S. Postal Service. In addition, he donated his time to several not-for-profit organizations, such as Anderson Ranch Art Center, Dance Aspen, the Northern Suburban Special Education District and serves on the board of the Chicago Art Foundation. Jamie’s work has been recognized by ACD100, the AIGA, American Corporate Identity, AR100, British Design Annual, Communication Arts, Graphis (identity, posters, and packaging), International Logos and Trademarks, the Los Angeles Art Director’s Club, Mead Annual Report Show, the New York Art Director’s Club, Print Magazine, and Type Directors Club. In addition, his work is in the permanent collection in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.
Michael Jager - Co-Founder & Creative Director, Jager Di Paola Kemp Design, Burlington, VM, USA
Michael co-founded the firm Jager Di Paola Associates in 1987 with Giovanna Di Paola Jager. Prior to that he had been senior art director at Paul Kaza Associates, Burlington, Vt., and creative/design director at Duncan-Jager, a Burlington corporate communications firm. In 1989 Jager Di Paola Associates became Jager Di Paola Kemp Design. Michael’s efforts with the studio are rooted in the belief that collaborative, multidisciplinary processes yield design distinction as well as rationally sound, emotionally powerful, and culturally relevant results.Michael’s work in creative direction and design with JDK’s design teams has been recognized internationally through awards and publications. His work in print, packaging, branded retail environments, video and film, and product graphics has been featured in design periodicals and books such as ID, Print, Art Direction, Fast Company, Monster Children, Creativity, Eye, How, Type Directors Annual, Graphis, Communication Arts, Sonic, and The Art of Modern Rock. Michael served as a judge for the 2000 Communication Arts Design Annual and has had his own work recognized at numerous design competitions and exhibitions.
Ronald Kapaz - Founder & Head Designer, Oz Design, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Ronald Kapaz is Head Designer, Founder and one of the three Partners of Oz Design, a 25-year-old design company located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Oz Design has been nominated for two consecutive years for best Brazilian Design Firm, in a survey held among leading designers of Brazil. Ronald is member of the Council for Ethics of ADG - Brazil. Born in Sao Paulo in 1956, Kapaz graduated as an architect from the Architecture and Urbanism School of the Sao Paulo University.
Sam Carter - Design Historian & Educator, Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, Vancouver, BC, Canada
Sam Carter, Canadian artist, designer, and educator has a long history of exploring the spirit of Canadian design and culture. In the mid 1960s as Senior Designer for the Hall of Life, Ontario Science Centre, Toronto, he reconstructed the Banting and Best (Noble Prize Recipients) laboratory where insulin was discovered and designed exhibits featuring Canadian contributions to science and technology. From then on, Carter has worked as creative director, curator and exhibition designer on numerous interpretive centres, museum exhibition and events in Canada and abroad. Central to much of his work is the exploration, documentation and celebration of Canadian applied arts. As an art and design educator at Emily Carr Institute of Art+Design he has created the only comprehensive course on Canadian design history titled: Canadian (design+craft) (history+theory). This online course includes video clips of noted Canadian designers from all parts of Canada.
Marian Bantjes - Designer, Typographer & Writer, Bowen Island, BC, Canada
Marian Bantjes is a designer, artist and writer working internationally from her base on a small island off the west coast of Canada, near Vancouver. She was trained as a book typesetter (1984-1994) and was a straight-up graphic designer from 1994-2003. But it is her highly personal, obsessive and sometimes strange graphic work that has since brought her international recognition. Marian is known for her detailed and lovingly precise vector art, her obsessive hand work, her patterning and ornament. Her clients include Pentagram (Michael Bierut), Stefan Sagmeister, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bruce Mau Design, Young & Rubicam Chicago, Anni Kuan, Houghton Mifflin, Print Magazine, Wallpaper*, WIRED, The Guardian (UK), The New York Times, among others. She has also worked on design materials for the AIGA, TypeCon 2007, and the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC).
