The Bantjes Factor

Marian BantjesI’m surprised there isn’t a Facebook group yet called “Fans of Marian Bantjes”. If someone makes one, I’m joining. We all know how incredibly talented Marian Bantjes is and how popular she’s become, but this is really getting silly. I jest, of course. No really, check this out:

Ever heard of a little American museum called the Cooper-Hewitt? Well, they’ve just accepted four of Marian’s pieces into their permanent collection. As the US National design archive, this is, uh, sort of a big deal. Congratulations Marian!

The pieces that have been accepted are:

  1. The Design Matters Live poster, designed for Debbie Millman’s AIGA/Adobe-sponsored live version of her show, Design Matters.
  2. The Fox River Paper booklet designed by Rick Valicenti and Gina Vieceli-Garza at Thirst, containing 40 pages of Marian’s work.
  3. The Seduction poster for the Yale Architecture Lecture series, designed by Michael Bierut at Pentagram, and Marian’s typography.
  4. Marian’s 2003 self promotion poster, which sometimes goes by the false promise of “Poster One”, and includes the death-defying phrase: “This being the first in a series of posters, Featuring an Exaltation of Protean Ornament and Other Fancy Stuff.”

And as if that isn’t enough, her “Click Me” prints are selling like hot cakes over at Coudal.com, she’s one of three instructors hosting the 5 day Type Camp on Galiano Island this summer, she’s speaking at TypeCon2007 in Seattle in August as well as serving as a Judge at the upcoming Graphex’08 Canadian design awards this November. There’s also an article in the July issue of Communications Arts and she’ll be speaking on the main stage at the AIGA conference in Denver this year. A busy girl to say the least.

I’ll always fondly remember the days when she was just our mac-jacket wearing Communications VP, always full of good ideas, opinions and a generous dose of sarcasm.
