The COLOUR questions you’re dying to ask!

Ernst VegtWhat’s right and what’s wrong with your profiles in Photoshop? How much does all this have to cost? Can I do contract quality proofs on my Inkjet?

Thursday, April 20th @ 800 Robson Square UBC, Room C400, 6:30pm. FREE to members and $20 for non members (*includes drinks/snacks). Please RSVP before Monday, April 17th.

Ernst Vegt, of Coast Imaging Arts, has assembled a group of colour specialists from a number of areas in the graphics industry, from photography and prepress to commercial print and the sign & display business to share their experiences of ICC based color management.

To begin the program, Ray Maxwell will give an overview of traditional colour management followed by a practical look at ICC based colour management. Ray was Colour Systems Engineer with Creo, and is very involved with colour issues & colour standards around the world, and has much inside knowledge to impart. Ray will take us through the workflow, the tools, and the challenges to a full ICC colour managed workflow.

Joining Ray will be a group of panelists from both the input side of the industry to those on the receiving or output side of the graphics industry.

Grant Bailey is Vice-President, Prepress, at Rhino Print Solutions;
Darren Bernaerdt manages the photographic studios and imaging departments for London Drugs at their head office, Richmond;
Rodney Griffin is Manager, Imaging, at The Portables in Richmond;
Ernst Vegt, of Coast Imaging Arts, New Westminster, will moderate

The panel members will present personal examples of successful ICC workflows as well as disappointments encountered.

The COLOUR questions you’re dying to ask!
  1. busse Says:

    What a great event, thank you Ernst for setting this up for us.

    It was a great refresher for those of us that have forgotten our colour theory classes to hear a good overview of colour basics from expert Ray Maxwell.

    And Darren Bernaerdt’s description and demonstration of real-world colour implementation solutions at London Drugs was informative.

    Calibration for digital output was explained by Rodney Griffin from The Portables (my favourite display vendor). The golden nugget from this presentaiton was to ge tthem to do colour swatch tests for you and to leave your colours as PMS colours, not converting to CMYK.

    Grant Bailey explained how Rhino Print Solutions manages colour and the continuous efforts they, and all commercial printers, put into calibrating colour. One interesting suggestion Grant made was to supply the printer with the native RGB files, essentially disregarding warnings and resisting the habit to convert to CMYK, unless you have a properly calibrated system with ICC profiles in place. He offered to do this for the designer, though a small cost for proofing or adjustments might be added.

    Ernst Vegt skillfully facilitated this panel discussion and demonstrated just how easy calibrating monitors and scanners can be using inexpensive hardware/software solutions such as Gretag MacBeth’s Eye-One Display2 (available for under $400).

    Though not a colour calibration neophyte by any means, I found this event informative and reminded me that I’ve let the colour slip in our studio. Guess what I’m doing today? Calibrating monitors, scanners and printers at the office. Fun!

    I also wanted to give my thanks for being invited to this informative discussion. I’m always interested in streamlining our workflow and more importantly looking for better ways to explain “Colour Management” and its many benefits to our clients. Thanks for the tips.

    I was also wondering if there was going to be a Q&A within this blog, I thought I heard this mentioned.

    Thanks
    Neil Christie
