Design School is Fun

StudentsI hated aspects of design school, but looking back am grateful for the experience. It taught me many of the conceptual thinking and process-oriented methods I still use today. What is your fondest or worst memory of school?

Design School is Fun

I liked the first year of design school the best, which ironically had no design classes at all, it was drawing and sculpture and creative processes and colour theory and photography. Then for second year I had to decide what to do with my life, so I picked design. It went downhill from there.

But seriously, any of the more conceptual-oriented classes were my favourites too. I didn’t like the more craft-oriented classes. I could never draw a straight line, I am not into precision drawing, and I almost hacked off my thumb cutting mounting board with an x-acto knife. I am so glad I never have to do paste-up or mounting anymore.

I have very bad memories of cutting up rubylith. For those of you born after 1970, you may wish to google that.

We have a similar design discussion (The Erosion of design education) going on over at our blog. Seems to be a very hot topic. Check it out at http://www.ideasonideas.com/2006/01/erosion-of-design-education/
